A Quick Tip for Cleaning Your Wood Floors

Many options are advertised for keeping your wood floors clean and looking their best but are actually the cause of many long-term care issues. We consistently restore floors that have a thick wax residue and contaminants from these “cleaning” products. These culprits are responsible for the excessive dulling and damage to the wood floor’s appearance. Here we share a great way to inexpensively and quickly care for your wood floors that will not result in any waxy buildup.

Cleaning Hardwood Flooring

Cleaning wood floors can be a little confusing. Often, we spend more time informing customers on what not to use. One product on the market that we unanimously approve of is the Swiffer Wood Jet System.  This simple, battery-operated, handheld system can be purchased online. The unit contains a Ph-neutral spray jet that propels the cleaning solution across the floor.  We recommend using the disposable pads that are held in place by a Velcro-backed platform.

The best way to use the unit is to “snow plow” the pad and spray as you work the pad. In other words, we do not suggest a “scrubbing” method. Rather, start by deploying “pushing” the pad from one end of your starting point to the other. The pad and operation should cover about 10” swipes per back-n-fourth. Start from one end of the room and work the pad to the opposite end of the room; turn and go back. That’s it!

Maintaining Hardwood Floors

The Swiffer Wood Jet System comes complete with enough liquid to clean your house several times, but, purchasing refill bottles can become costly. We have come up with a way of reusing the same bottle without having to spend extra money buying refill units.

The best way to do this is by using an X-ACTO knife to carefully cut a 3/4” hole in the top of the bottle and making your own refill solution from any Ph-neutral floor cleaning solution concentrate and diluting it with water from your tap.  A “T” cork from a whiskey bottle will due to “plug” the hold once filled. Many concentrates are available online or from your local hardware or grocery store. Members Mark (Sam’s Wholesale) surface concentrate or LA’s Totally Awesome Multi-Surface Cleaner with Lavender Scent is perfect for the job.

Remember to vacuum or dry mop your floor prior to using the Swiffer Wood Jet and floor cleaning method. Please contact Clean ReCoat if you want a deep cleaning and recoating of your wood floors.
